Rita Hogan: [00:00:00] Hi, this is Rita Hogan and welcome to the Dogs Our Individuals Podcast. I'm a clinical Canine Herbalist and I've been practicing for over 20 years. This podcast is all about your dog through an herbal lens. So let's get to it and dive right in. Hi everyone. Welcome to another edition of Our Dogs, our Individuals podcast.
And this is a short, so shorts can be. Shared with your favorite dog Loving friends. Uh, they're easy and can give you some good information. A lot of people are writing into the podcast and I so appreciate it. Uh, a lot of shorts are answering some of those questions which everyone can learn from. And our shorts are sponsored by Real Dog Box.
We love our sponsor Real Dog Box, and I was spending some time on their website a few days ago and I was. up their courses and just to go [00:01:00] over 'em. They have a real dog food nutrition course. Uh, it looks fantastic. It's for good for dog parents. You can do it on your desktop. It's interactive. And so I find that really cool.
Then there's their professional Canine Nutrition certification that is coming soon. I'm pretty excited about that. That one is designed for veterinary professionals and different holistic practitioners, but I bet you any money that you could probably take it if you wanted to. It does have continuing education credits.
But I'm pretty excited about their courses and I know they have some coming up in the future, so check that out. Real Dog Box. It is a subscription dog box full of real treats that are great for any type of dog. You do want to supervise your dogs when they're eating these treats. It's real food. I just love this [00:02:00] company, so check 'em out.
Feed real.com or real.dog. So we are going to answer some questions today. Well, we, being me, Nika has written into the podcast and she says, I was really hoping you could talk about parasites, what herbs are good for parasites and what herbs can help restore the gut after a dog has had a parasitic infection.
Thank you so much, your podcast. It's fantastic. Thank you, uh, Nika. I appreciate your support. Okay, so parasites. We are going to have to deal with some different types of parasites and it depends on how serious the infection is. Uh, that's for sure. And there are some, you know, some herbal protocols that I really can't go over on the podcast because they definitely.
Requires some supervision, but the first one that I can think of, you know, is tape worm. And [00:03:00] there's a lot of things that you can use for tape worm, but the one thing I use the most of is dandelion phyto embryonic therapy, which is available in my store and also. Ground pumpkin seeds as a preventative or to prevent reinfection.
There are some homeopathic remedies for tape worm. I know that Homeo animal has a tape worm remedy and there's, you know, so many things that we can look at. One of the things that you need to. No, is that
when parasites are in the body, especially worms, they deplete coq 10. And so you want to give coq 10 in the aftermath and during, um, worm treatment.
So make sure that gets done. And then there's things like, you know, I use a lot of phyto embryonic therapy for these types of things, but you can do Ella campaign again, dandelion. Parsley is good [00:04:00] for tape worm, so you can do a parsley infusion, that's like a tea, just steep it until it's green and, and put it over your dog's food about a quarter inch up from the bowl.
There are a lot of different worms out there, but we can do an episode on that. But to, to answer your question about Giardia,
Giardia is kind of, It's kind of a pervasive parasite. It's not a worm. It's more of a, it's a protozoan and it, it's definitely a single celled organism and it lays eggs and it moves through like the small intestine.
And what makes Giardo giardia so difficult is that it forms these hard cysts around itself and then the eggs kind of interfere with digestion of fats and oils, and that's gonna. The absorption of vitamins, and so you really wanna take care of the Giardia infection. So it's, I mean, it usually presents like diarrhea, dehydration, of course.
Again, nutrient [00:05:00] deficiencies, lots of inflammation. Diarrhea is one of the biggest things. So one. Of the issue with Giardia is that it can pass through your dog's feces and it can go inside the lawn and kind of live there outside for months. So you wanna make sure you're picking up your dog's poop as thoroughly as possible.
You can also put some hydrogen peroxide on their poop in the yard to make sure that it's not going to survive. To heal Giardi in the gut, I use a blend of enzymes and golden seal on an empty stomach, and that the enzymatic protocol tends to work really well and you have to do it on an empty stomach.
And then the animal essentials, Echinacea and golden seal is really good for healing. Giardia up, you're gonna give the enzymes. Protease, lipase and amylase on an empty stomach over a period of, I would say, [00:06:00] you know, seven to eight days. And then you're gonna break for seven days and then you're gonna do another, uh, seven to eight days.
And I like to give Golden seal. And the Echinacea blend by animal Essentials during that time. And add just a pinch now. A pinch appropriate. You know, if you got a big mastiff, it's, you know, it's a larger pinch. If you got a five pound chihuahua, you're gonna do a speck of ground cloves on their food during the time when they're doing this protocol.
You would just use the Golden Seal Echinacea mixture as directed. I would try this first to see if you can heal up the Giardia on your own, and then if not, you can contact me for a consult and I will give you a special, um, warming or giardia, uh, formula, uh, for you to use. And then that would be under supervision and based on.[00:07:00]
I do wanna say that I have written articles about worms, like tape worms, hook worms, round worms on both the dog's Naturally blog. Dogs. Dogs Naturally Magazine blog, as well as the Adored Beast blog. And if you go to either website and type in worms, uh, worm, you, uh, those articles will come up and you can give them a read.
There's such fantastic information in those. It took me a while to put that together. Uh, you can take Peeky at that. Okay, so another question that's come into the podcast we will address. Jamie writes in and says, I love your podcast. Thank you, Jamie. My dog has chronic allergies. Uh, it's been extremely frustrating and sad for her.
She's currently on a raw food diet, taking milk thistle, pre probiotics, and milligrams. Quell twice a day. I've tried to take her off Apple Quell and she was [00:08:00] so inflamed, it was heartbreaking. She is always yeasty and smells.
You mentioned suppressing the immune system will only make it back with a vengeance and there's anything I can do.
Okay, so first, Jamie, what you need to do, uh, in my opinion is put your dog on a meat, bone and organ. Only diet for about eight, 10 weeks. You can add in some green powders. I would test the ears for that. And if you don't know what I'm talking about, I would definitely take my energetics course on canine herbalism.com.
It'll teach you how to test the ears. It'll teach you all about the energetics of your dog, and it can help so much. A lot of times when dogs are having problems with raw, raw fed diets and still having all these issues, the energetics is at play there. Also, it could. Sensitive to histamine. So Apoquel is going to work against your dog.
It, it hurts the immune system. You can look at John, uh, Dr. Judy Morgan's website and she has a really great article on all things Apoquel. I [00:09:00] would definitely look into that. I might start doing the Leaky Gut Protocol by a door beast. You can find that in my store. Or you can find that, uh, you know, pretty much across the web.
Just Google that. I would work with that first, and I would start off at a quarter. Of the recommendations for that protocol, and I might alternate like two weeks on the Leaky Gro Gut Protocol, two weeks, uh, on the Yeasty Beast Protocol by Adored Beast and just kind of go back and forth with that and again, Quarter of the dose to start, go super slow, slow and steady wins the race with this one, Jamie.
And you may need some assistance so you can reach out for a consult, but I know how frustrating this is. But the goal would be to get your dog off Apoquel and be very careful, careful about your pre and probiotics. They could be adding to the issue. Uh, if your dog has high histamine, woo. Can't wait for my book to.
It will teach you about histamine and [00:10:00] leaky gut and yeast. So that's about all I can say to you to answer your question because I don't know a ton about your dog. However, I would go with that. And, uh, Julianne Lee, who. Created those ye, the Yeasty Bees Protocol and the Leaky Gut Protocol. She is the one that recommends alternating them back and forth.
And I, uh, am going to say to start out super low and super slow. Okay, that is about it for our short Thanks again to the Real Dog box for sponsoring this short podcast and keeping us real informed.
